Preparing for Your Family Session

What to Expect & How to Feel Confident

Family sessions aren’t about perfect behavior, stiff posing, or everyone smiling at the camera at the same time. They’re about connection, movement, and capturing your family exactly as you are in this season. This guide will walk you through what to expect before, during, and after your family session—so you can arrive relaxed, confident, and ready to enjoy the experience.

What a Family Session Is (and Isn’t)

Your family session is designed to feel easy and natural.

It is:

  • Connection-focused
  • Gently guided
  • Playful and relaxed
  • Adaptable to your family’s energy

It is not:

  • Rushed
  • Overly posed
  • Focused on “perfect” behavior
  • About performing for the camera

You don’t need to prepare your kids to act a certain way. You don’t need to know how to pose. And you definitely don’t need to worry about whether everything is going “right.” That’s my job.

Preparing Your Kids (and Letting Go of Expectations)

Kids don’t need to be coached—they need space to be themselves.

A few simple tips:

  • Let them know you’re going to hang out and play together
  • Decide if you are going to promise rewards for “good behavior”
  • Bring snacks, water, and comfort items if needed
  • Trust that breaks and movement are always welcome

Some of the most meaningful images come from in-between moments: a quick hug, a laugh, a curious glance. Those moments can’t be forced—and that’s what makes them special. See the checklist to below to help with preparing for your family session!

What Session Day Feels Like

Session day is meant to feel calm, relaxed, and surprisingly easy. There’s no rush to “perform,” no pressure for perfect behavior, and no expectation that everything will go exactly as planned.

When we begin, I’ll help everyone settle in and get comfortable. I’ll offer gentle direction and prompts so you always know where to stand, what to do with your hands, or how to interact—but I’ll never interrupt real moments as they unfold. You’ll be encouraged to walk, cuddle, laugh, and connect in ways that feel natural to your family.

Kids are free to move, explore, and be themselves. Breaks are always welcome. If someone needs a moment, we take it. Some of the most meaningful images happen in the quiet in-between moments—the quick hugs, shared laughter, and fleeting expressions that can’t be posed or forced.

If things feel a little chaotic at times, that’s not a problem. That’s real life—and it photographs beautifully.

Location & Movement

Location plays an important role in shaping how your session feels, but it’s not about finding the “perfect” backdrop. It’s about choosing a space that allows your family to relax and interact naturally.

Whether we’re outdoors in soft, open light or inside the comfort of your home, I look for spaces that invite movement and connection. Areas where kids can walk, run, or explore tend to create the most genuine moments, and I’ll guide you into places that offer both beautiful light and room to breathe.

Movement is always encouraged. Walking hand in hand, lifting little ones into the air, sitting close together, or simply letting kids lead the way—these moments bring life and emotion into your images. You don’t need to hold a pose or worry about standing perfectly still. The more you move and interact, the more your photos will reflect who you truly are as a family.

The goal is never stiffness or perfection—it’s ease, connection, and a session that feels like time well spent together.

What Parents Often Worry About
(and Why You Don’t Need To)

“What if my kids don’t listen?”

That’s expected—and completely okay.

“What if it feels awkward?”

I’ll guide you every step of the way.

“What if it doesn’t go as planned?”

Some of the best moments come from the unexpected.

Family sessions don’t rely on perfection. They rely on presence.

After Your Session

Once your session is complete, I carefully curate and edit your images in my signature style—natural, warm, and timeless.

You’ll receive:

  • A full gallery of high-resolution digital images
  • Images that tell the full story of your session
  • Photographs ready to download, share, and print

I also offer guidance for creating heirloom albums, so your images don’t live only on your phone.

A Final Thought

Years from now, these images will bring you back—not just to how your family looked, but to how this season felt. The laughter. The movement. The closeness. The beautiful chaos. All you have to do is show up and love on your people. I’ll take care of the rest.
