Preparing for Your Maternity Session

What to Expect & How to Feel Confident

Maternity sessions aren’t about stiff posing or trying to look a certain way—they’re about honoring this season of anticipation, strength, and connection. This is a time to slow down, breathe, and document the quiet moments before everything changes. This guide will walk you through what to expect before, during, and after your maternity session so you can arrive feeling comfortable, confident, and fully present.

What a maternity Session Is (and Isn’t)

Your maternity session is designed to feel calm, intentional, and natural.

It is focused on connection, gentle movement, and honoring this season of anticipation. I’ll guide you softly so nothing feels awkward or overly posed, while leaving space for quiet moments and natural interaction. The pace is relaxed and unhurried, allowing you to feel comfortable and confident throughout the session.

It is not rushed or about trying to look a certain way. There’s no pressure to perform or pose perfectly. You don’t need to know what to do in front of the camera—that’s my role. All you need to do is show up and be present in this moment.

Including Children & Setting Expectations

If your maternity session includes children, the focus remains on connection—not performance. Kids don’t need to be coached or asked to behave a certain way. Instead, they’re invited to be part of the experience in a way that feels natural and comfortable.

Let them know we’ll be spending time together, walking, cuddling, and taking breaks when needed. Bringing snacks, water, or a small comfort item can help keep things relaxed. Rewards for “good behavior” are entirely optional, but low expectations often lead to the most genuine moments.

Some of the most meaningful images come from in-between moments—a quick hug, a shared laugh, or a curious hand resting on a growing bump. Those moments unfold naturally, and that’s what makes them worth remembering. See the checklist to below to help with preparing for your session!

What Session Day Feels Like

Maternity sessions are calm, intentional, and deeply reflective. This is a moment to slow down and acknowledge the anticipation, strength, and transformation happening in your body and your family.

On session day, I’ll guide you gently, offering simple direction so nothing feels awkward or over-posed. You’ll be encouraged to move slowly, breathe deeply, and connect with your growing baby—whether that’s resting your hands on your bump, walking thoughtfully through the space, or sharing quiet moments with your partner or children.

There’s no pressure to “perform” or look a certain way. The focus is on creating images that feel grounded, confident, and emotionally rich. These sessions often feel peaceful and affirming—an opportunity to pause and honor this season before everything changes.

Location & Movement

Location sets the tone for maternity sessions, and we’ll choose a space that feels meaningful and comfortable to you. Whether that’s an outdoor setting surrounded by soft light and natural textures or a cozy in-home session, the goal is always to create a calm environment where you can move freely and feel at ease.

Movement during maternity sessions is slow and intentional. Walking, gentle swaying, adjusting fabric, or simply standing still in the light all bring a sense of grace and presence to your images. Flowing fabrics and layered textures often enhance this movement, adding depth and softness without effort.

These sessions are about honoring where you are right now—strong, expectant, and deeply connected.

What Parents Often Worry About
(and Why You Don’t Need To)

“What if my kids don’t listen?”

That’s expected—and completely okay.

“What if it feels awkward?”

I’ll guide you every step of the way.

“What if it doesn’t go as planned?”

Some of the best moments come from the unexpected.

Family sessions don’t rely on perfection. They rely on presence.

A Final Thought
