Preparing for Your Newborn Session

What to Expect & How to Feel Confident

Newborn sessions are gentle, unhurried, and completely baby-led. There’s no expectation for schedules, sleep, or perfection—only space to soak in these early days. This guide will walk you through what to expect before, during, and after your newborn session so you can feel prepared, supported, and at ease while we document the details and connections you’ll want to remember forever.

What a newborn Session Is (and Isn’t)

Your newborn session is designed to be slow, gentle, and meaningful.

It is centered around connection, comfort, and responding to your baby’s needs. We move at a pace that allows for feeding, soothing, cuddling, and breaks whenever necessary. I’ll offer light guidance when helpful, but much of the session unfolds naturally as you care for and bond with your baby.

It is not rushed, structured, or focused on perfection. There’s no expectation for your baby to sleep, cooperate, or follow a schedule. You don’t need to prepare or plan beyond being present—everything else is taken care of for you.

Preparing Siblings & Letting Go of Expectations

When siblings are part of a newborn session, the goal isn’t perfect behavior—it’s comfort and connection. Young children don’t need to be coached or corrected; they simply need reassurance and space to adjust to this new chapter.

It can help to let them know we’ll be spending time together, cuddling the baby, and taking breaks as needed. Snacks, water, and familiar comfort items are always welcome. There’s no pressure for long attention spans or constant cooperation—short, meaningful moments are more than enough.

Some of the most heartfelt images happen in the quiet in-between moments: a gentle touch, a curious look, or a proud sibling sitting close.

Those moments can’t be rushed or forced, and that’s exactly why they’re so special.

What Session Day Feels Like

Newborn sessions are slow, gentle, and entirely baby-led. There is no rushing and no expectation for your baby to sleep, cooperate, or follow a schedule. We move at a pace that feels calm and supportive, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, cuddling, and breaks whenever they’re needed.

If the session is in-home, I’ll take a few moments to settle into your space and observe the light. If the session is at the studio, I will have the space prepared with a warm temperature and adequate light. From there, I’ll gently guide you into natural moments—holding your baby close, rocking, feeding, or simply being together. These sessions are less about posing and more about documenting connection: the way you instinctively comfort your baby, the tiny details you can’t stop staring at, and the quiet rhythm of these early days.

If things feel messy or unpredictable, that’s not a disruption—that’s exactly what this season looks like. Some of the most meaningful images come from those unscripted, in-between moments when you’re simply responding to your baby’s needs.

Location & Movement

Newborn sessions typically take place in your home or at the studio, either space should be comfortable for you and your baby. I work primarily with natural light, choosing areas near windows that feel calm and uncluttered. You don’t need to prepare your entire home—just a few light-filled spaces where we can move gently and naturally.

Movement during a newborn session is subtle and unforced. Rocking, swaying, walking slowly from room to room, or settling into a favorite chair all create beautiful, organic moments. Baby-led movement allows your session to unfold naturally and ensures your images feel honest and true to this fleeting season.

Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. It only needs to feel like yours.

What Parents Often Worry About
(and Why You Don’t Need To)

“What if my kids don’t listen?”

That’s expected—and completely okay.

“What if it feels awkward?”

I’ll guide you every step of the way.

“What if it doesn’t go as planned?”

Some of the best moments come from the unexpected.

Family sessions don’t rely on perfection. They rely on presence.
