This year, I’m intentionally leaning into 10‑minute mini sessions—and it’s not about doing less. It’s about focusing on what actually matters. Shorter sessions offer the perfect balance: enough time to capture a beautiful variety of images while keeping the experience relaxed, efficient, and genuinely enjoyable—especially for families with children.

The Sweet Spot for Real Moments

Ten minutes might sound quick, but in practice, it’s the ideal window. It allows us to move through a thoughtful mix of poses, groupings, and candid moments without over-directing or overthinking. Kids stay engaged. Parents stay calm. And the energy stays light. Longer sessions can sometimes tip into fatigue—kids get antsy, attention drifts, and what started as excitement can turn into pressure. Mini sessions keep things moving, playful, and natural, which is exactly where the magic lives.

Because Kids Are… Kids

When photographing children, things often don’t go according to plan—and honestly, that’s the most accurate depiction of life itself. I’m not chasing perfectly posed, overly polished images. I want photographs that feel alive: kids laughing, moving, being silly, being themselves. Those in‑between moments—the giggles, the curiosity, the quick hugs—are where the real story is told. And those moments don’t require an hour to unfold. They just require presence.

A Better Experience for Everyone

Mini sessions remove the pressure to “perform.” There’s no need to worry about perfect behavior or forcing smiles. As long as you show up at ease and joyful, the rest follows naturally. Children feed off that energy, and it shows beautifully in the final images. These sessions are designed to feel effortless: arrive, connect, play a little, and walk away knowing you’ve captured something meaningful—without it taking over your day.

Intentional, Not Rushed

Leaning into 10‑minute mini sessions is a creative and intentional choice. It honors your time, your children’s attention spans, and the kind of honest imagery I value most. Sometimes less time doesn’t mean less depth—it means more clarity, more joy, and more real moments preserved just as they are.

Designed for Families in Lansing and Beyond

For families in Lansing, Michigan and the surrounding areas, these mini photography sessions are intentionally designed to fit real life. Whether we’re photographing children in the studio or at a thoughtfully chosen location, the goal remains the same: timeless, emotion-filled images without unnecessary stress. As a Lansing portrait photographer, I’ve seen time and again how shorter sessions lead to better results. Kids feel free to move, explore, and engage naturally, which allows me to capture expressive, heartfelt portraits that feel both classic and honest.

Mini Sessions, Maximum Meaning

These mini sessions are ideal for families who value quality over quantity. In just ten minutes, we can create a diverse gallery—full family portraits, sibling connections, and individual images—while keeping the experience fun and relaxed. Whether you’re updating family photos, celebrating a season of childhood, or simply wanting images that reflect who your children are right now, mini sessions offer a beautiful, approachable way to invest in professional photography. By leaning into this format, I’m able to focus on what matters most: meaningful connection, joyful energy, and portraits you’ll love seeing on your walls for years to come.

A Note on Timing and Punctuality

All mini sessions are scheduled back-to-back. Because of this, punctuality is extremely important so I can offer every family the best possible experience for the full duration of their session. I intentionally schedule sessions during what I believe will be the best light of the day, especially for evening sessions, which means arriving on time truly matters. If you arrive late—or if time is needed during the session for outfit changes, snacks, or settling kids—this will cut into your photography time. In most cases, I will have sessions scheduled both before and after yours, so extending sessions isn’t possible. My goal is always to create a calm, joyful experience from start to finish, and arriving ready helps ensure we can make the most of those ten beautifully intentional minutes together.

Thoughtfully Chosen Locations

I put a great deal of intention into selecting the location for each mini session. Every location is chosen with the final gallery in mind—I want to ensure I’m delivering a cohesive, timeless, and beautiful collection of images. The locations I select offer a neutral, versatile backdrop that pairs well with any outfit choice, allowing your family—and your connection—to remain the focus. Each space is chosen specifically for its beautiful light and natural elements. This thoughtful approach to location helps create galleries that feel effortless, elevated, and visually consistent images that you’ll love both now and for years to come.

Expectations

As I’ve shared in many of my posts, my biggest priority when photographing a family is to tell the beautiful story of your life. Does beautiful mean perfect? Absolutely not. Beautiful looks like silly, fun, chaotic, exciting, loving—and everything in between. It’s real life, honestly documented. The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to avoid stressing or trying to micromanage the session. Children are incredibly perceptive, and when they sense stress or overwhelm, it often shows in their behavior. When you’re relaxed and present, your children naturally follow that lead. My approach is intentionally light‑hearted and fun. I pose and direct families in an action‑based way, encouraging movement and connection so the images feel natural—like I happened to capture an authentic moment between you and the people you love most. You don’t need to worry about perfection. Just show up, be together, and trust the process. I’ll take care of the rest.
