Spring in Michigan feels like a fresh start. Soft light, blooming trees, warmer evenings — it’s one of my favorite seasons to photograph families, growing bellies, and brand new babies.

One of the most common questions I get before every session is:

“What should we wear?”

The good news? Spring styling doesn’t have to be complicated. When done thoughtfully, it creates images that feel timeless, cohesive, and beautifully connected.

Below is my go-to guide for styling your family, maternity, or newborn session this spring.

(Always) Start With Mom

No matter the session type, I always recommend starting with mom’s outfit first. When mom feels confident and comfortable, it sets the tone for everything else.

Look for:

  • Soft, flowy fabrics
  • Movement (especially for outdoor sessions)
  • Light layers
  • Feminine, timeless silhouettes
  • From there, we build the rest of the family around that look.

Spring Color Palettes That Photograph Beautifully

Spring sessions shine when colors feel soft and cohesive rather than overly bright.

Here are my favorite palettes:

Natural Neutrals

Cream, ivory, light tan, soft sage, muted browns

→ Perfect for outdoor and studio sessions

→ Timeless and elevated

Warm Blush + Rose

Blush, muted mauve, soft peach

→ Beautiful for maternity and motherhood-focused images

Spring Outfit Inspiration by Session Type

Family Sessions

Spring family sessions are all about movement and connection.

For Moms:

Flowy dresses with subtle texture or soft prints photograph beautifully. Midi and maxi lengths allow for natural movement.

For Dads:

Neutral button-downs, henleys, or lightweight sweaters paired with chinos or soft denim. Avoid athletic wear or bold graphics.

For Kids:

Soft textures, simple patterns, and pieces they can comfortably move in. Think linen overalls, cotton dresses, light cardigans.

Bare feet work beautifully for beach or in-home sessions. For outdoor sessions, opt for neutral-toned shoes.

Maternity Sessions

Spring maternity sessions feel especially magical.

Flowing fabrics catch the breeze beautifully at sunset, while studio sessions call for soft, sculpted silhouettes.

Consider:

  • Bump-friendly dresses in cream, blush, or soft blue
  • Fitted knit dresses for a more modern look
  • Light shawls or wraps for layering

Partners and siblings should coordinate around mom’s look with softer, neutral tones to keep the focus on connection.

Hair and makeup are always encouraged for maternity sessions — not for perfection, but for confidence.

Newborn Sessions (In-Home or Studio)

Newborn styling should feel calm and simple.

The focus is always on your baby — their tiny fingers, soft eyelashes, and the way they curl into you.

For Parents:

Cream, beige, soft gray, and light blue photograph beautifully in indoor light. Stick to simple, comfortable pieces without heavy patterns.

For Baby:

A neutral onesie, swaddle, or even diaper-only moments are perfect. Multiple outfit changes aren’t necessary.

The softer the palette, the more timeless your images will feel years from now.

Keep It Simple

Spring sessions don’t require a completely new wardrobe. Often, the most beautiful pieces are already hanging in your closet.

The goal is not perfection.

It’s connection.

When your wardrobe feels cohesive and comfortable, you can relax — and that’s when the magic happens.
